Can anybody...somebody tell me why in the shit we got involved in war in a place with so much mud! Anyway, here are some great black and white pictures showing scenes from around the 9th Infantry Division.
Here is a great picture. How many times have we been in this situation! This guy was with us in the 3/60th, but I can't remember his name. Help, anyone!
This is a picture of Col Geraci, 1st Bn., who, with LTC Schroder, seen below, landed to fly out a wounded trooper and ended up in the soup. I don't remember where this was taken, however I hope he didn't pull the trigger on that M-16! Photo by John Gardenhire. Thanx to Mike Burke for the ID.
Here is the rescue party carrying out some of the wounded. The guy in the front right was LTC Schroder, CO of the 2nd Bn., 39th Inf. LTC Schroder was later KIA. They named a FSB after him in the Plain of Reeds. Special thanx to Cliff Schultz.
Curtis Dugger Jr., I think, enjoying something that resembles watermelon. Dugger was one hell of an M-79 man!
Shot taken at Tiger's Lair, 3/47th sometime between April '69 and August '69. If you were there, this is part of Bravo Company, right across the street from HHQ, right next to the MP compound.
These two guys were also with me, but again, no names. I think the one guy's name might be Sabray, or something close.
God bless the RTO! Before going to sniper school (and my dad wondered why in the hell I volunteered for that) I was an RTO. The only good part about being an RTO was you got the cushy night spot to sleep near the LT.
You know, I really feel sorry for everyone who had to go to RVN and was not an 11B. They were deprived of this type activity. I mean, hell, people pay good money to spend lots of time in the water! Look at this guy, he smilin'...kinda!
Here's a pic outside of Siagon. This is the home of the 82nd Airborne. I was on my way back from R&R in Bangkok. Does anyone have any Bangkok stories? If you do, don't tell my wife. She thinks I spent a week there helping poor and deprived.....Well, I did spend alot of $$ on the economy. Don't ask!
Here the boys are waiting for a Chinook pickup to go back to Dong Tam. These lucky shits are going home! Yeah!! Hey, that guy on the motorcycle doesn't have helmet. He might get killed if he's in an accident!
Here are those same lads in the Chinooks. Fasten your seatbelt and prepare for takeoff! I have no idea why I was here. I sure as hell wasn't going home...not yet anyway.
Ah, the life of a door gunner. Here we have the business end, er side,of the Chinook. The boys' got the '60 at the ready.
Chinooks resupplying somewhere near Tigers Lair.
More Chinooks delivering the needed supplies to us in the far south. Do you remember the blessed SP packs? How about the Conex's? I remember the AV boys dropping a whole conex of beer in the river. Claimed the hook broke. I think they were pissed about something and took it out on us!
Chinooks, or more affectionally called "Shit-Hooks". Did you ever try to hold down a shelter half caught in the prop wash of these guys? If so, you know how they got the nickname. They had these big bastards lined up, ready to go.
Here's a fresh load of goodies brought in by the 9th Aviation Group, God bless 'em.
Eagle flight heading out from the resupply area. Did you ever have these guys come in for a pickup, then discover you set up the PZ backward and had to run your ass off to get the right chopper? This happened to us once or twice. Good thing we were young!
Remember these fuel bladders? They brought them into us by the dozens. It was our only supply link. Check out the Cobra's in the background.
